Kyrenia – Icon Museum

Located in the Greek Orthodox Arkhangelos Church in northern Cyprus, the Icon Museum was created by the Department of Antiquities and Museums of the Ministry of National Education and Culture, and was incorporated into the church in May 1991. The church itself dates back to the 1860 century, and visitors will be able to admire the architecture as well as explore the building and the museum within.

The museum, as its name suggests, boasts a range of icons from the history of Kyrenia and the surrounding areas. For those looking to learn more about the history of the area, this is a fascinating and interesting place to visit, and you can explore an array of icons at this museum. The actual building forms part of a distinctive skyline in the area, and stands out. It was originally dedicated to the Archangel Michael.

When you visit the Icon Museum you will find icons that have been collected from various churches in the Kyrenia area, and you can enjoy exploring three levels filled with fascinating exhibits and icons. You will find icons that date back as far as the seventeenth century, although there is not information with regards to the origins of the icons in terms of which church they are from.

The local icon will give visitors a taste of some of Kyrenia’s history, and you can view displays that include John the Baptist’s beheading and Saint Luke and his ox. The religious artwork that can be found in the Icon Museum is skilled and finely crafted, and this museum enables the preservation of valuable icons that were saved from theft and looting after 1974, when many churches in Cyprus had these icons stolen from them.

The Icon Museum is a great choice for those that want to explore both art and history, as well as the fascinating architecture of the church itself. The range of icons and exhibitions will keep visitors to this attraction busy, and will help to provide an insight into religious art and history of Cyprus.
